2013 will see budgets unleashed to expand WiFi deployment to meet the surging wireless data.

The explosion in smartphones and tablets that we have discussed in the past is forcing cellular carriers and other players jockeying for a piece of the wireless video / commerce / marketing market to uncork billions of dollars to expand wireless bandwidth.  Data from a key wireless industry conference and an ATT analyst day in recent weeks may be considered a starting gun.  The following chart from the Wireless Broadband Alliance sends a straight forward message – 2013 is “PIVOTAL” and 54% of the carriers plan to deploy next generation hotspots (i.e. souped up WiFi) in 2013.  This later point was underscored by ATT’s announcement to spend $8 billion to expand its wireless capabilities to meet the growth in tablets and smartphones as depicted in the second chart.  The quote below the second chart by the analyst at Ovum is a good description of the emerging “land grab” for WiFi locations.  Aberdeen is well geared to participate in this growth.  Jeb Terry, Sr. November 17, 2012.
